01 / Background
Telling a Mid-Autumn product story as a rabbit workshop
In a very short running time, this Mid-Autumn demo had to show character performance, Eastern fantasy settings and appetizing food texture all at once, so brands and film production partners could see what kind of imagery a mooncake theme can deliver. The story follows a single mooncake from dough to gift box, and the warmth of the festival lives in each handmade step.
The story is set in a workshop in the Moon Palace: round doors and windows, wooden worktables, clay jars and ovens make up a warm space for making mooncakes, and rabbits with different fur, outfits and expressions each take charge of kneading, preparing filling, molding, baking, glazing and boxing. Viewers follow the steps one by one, while the rabbits' diligence, greed and sleepiness become the memorable laughs.
02 / Creative Highlights
Process, Characters and Food Texture
01
The process is the storyline
The camera first passes through a round doorway into the workshop, then follows the dough, the golden filling, the pressed patterns and the rows of mooncakes. Every stage has specific tools and ingredients, and the final boxing pays off all the making that came before, giving the short a clear beginning and end.
02
Small slip-ups reveal how the characters relate
A little rabbit with a flower sneaks a taste of egg yolk, and the black-and-white rabbit next to it notices and reaches out to set it straight; the glazing rabbit, stuck with a repetitive job, lets out a yawn. These gags all happen during the filling and glazing steps, so each character's personality comes through naturally in their looks, actions and reactions to one another.
03
Watching the mooncakes bake from inside the oven
As the mooncakes are pushed into the oven, the camera stays inside, looking out. When the door closes, the frame goes dark; when it opens again, the pale crusts have turned glossy and golden, and the rabbits' eager, smiling faces reappear. With the camera locked in place, the before-and-after of baking becomes a small highlight for showing off the food.
04
Warm textures make the Moon Palace a welcoming workshop
Wood, clay jars, soft rabbit fur and cream-colored dough are all bathed in warm lamplight and the glow of the oven, with just a hint of blue-grey night outside the windows. The fantasy architecture evokes the Mid-Autumn Moon Palace, while the close-ups stay on tangible materials and golden crusts.

Holding Up the Gift Box with a Thumbs-Up
The packing rabbit holds up a gift box printed with the Jade Rabbit and a full moon toward the camera, while the factory-manager rabbit smiles beside it and gives a thumbs-up, wrapping up the story of making mooncakes.
Completed a roughly 37-second 16:9 Mid-Autumn mooncake concept demo that uses one complete workshop story to show rabbit characters, food texture and a gift-box ending working together.
Case Study
Liandan AI Studio · Mid-Autumn Concept Demo | A group of rabbits turn mooncake making into a little comedy
The most common images in Mid-Autumn films: the moon, lanterns, a neatly arranged box of mooncakes.
We wanted to shoot it differently — not mooncakes sitting there, but how they get made.
That gave us this Moon Palace workshop: a group of rabbits, each in charge of one step, from kneading the dough all the way to boxing.
This is a 37-second Mid-Autumn mooncake concept demo, made to show what kind of AI animation a mooncake or holiday theme can deliver.

01
Why make a Mid-Autumn film about “making mooncakes”?
Holiday shorts easily turn into a set of pretty establishing shots: the moon rises, lanterns light up, mooncakes sit on a table. Beautiful, but forgettable.
We put the focus on the making process: a mooncake starts as dough, then goes through filling prep, wrapping, molding, baking and glazing, and finally into a gift box. Every step has specific tools and ingredients, so as viewers follow the process, the story naturally has a beginning and an end.
The direction was clear, too: no cold mechanical assembly line, but something handmade and homey. Setting it in the Moon Palace keeps the Mid-Autumn association, but the building is an ancient-style timber structure, with wooden worktables, clay jars and an oven fire inside, so it looks like a workshop where you can almost smell the baking.

02
One rabbit, one job, one temperament
If all the rabbits wore the same apron and made the same moves, the film would become an assembly line. We wrote a personality for each rabbit first, then designed its look.
The kneading rabbit works especially hard, kneading as if it were a race; the black-and-white filling rabbit is meticulous and wears a chef's hat; the lop-eared wrapping rabbit is clever and a little greedy; the glazing rabbit has the most repetitive job and gets sleepy easily; the packing rabbit is quick and nimble; and the factory-manager rabbit in a vest is gruff on the outside but soft at heart, and has the final say on the gift box.
Their looks are distinct too: grey, black-and-white, light brown; one wears a headscarf, one a little flower, others a flower wreath or a small neckerchief. Each rabbit has front, side and back turnaround views plus a head close-up, used as references when generating video so the same rabbit looks the same from shot to shot.
First-version kneading rabbit: more realistic, with restrained expressionsRevised kneading rabbit: fluffier fur, rounder face, white headscarf
The first-version rabbits were fairly realistic, with restrained expressions. In the revision, we redrew the whole cast in a plush, round-faced, big-eyed direction, and made their expressions happier and more open — characters in a promo should make people smile at first sight.

No extra gags — the humor grows out of the process
A film of just over thirty seconds has no time for separate jokes. Our solution was to build the humor into the process: whichever step we're on, the rabbit at that step causes a little mishap.
At the wrapping step, the lop-eared rabbit places an egg yolk on the dough wrapper and helps itself to a bite of filling, eyes half-closed in bliss. The black-and-white filling rabbit beside it, arms folded, sees everything and gives it a light tap on the head.
Clip · 00:11–00:15
Caught Sneaking a Bite
Sneaking a bite, getting spotted, taking a tap: three actions are enough to show the relationship between the two rabbits.
At the glazing step, tray after tray of mooncakes keeps coming, and the little rabbit in the flower wreath, partway through, opens its mouth wide in a yawn. A repetitive chore told through a single yawn says it more directly than any caption could.
04
Helping viewers see how mooncakes are really made
In a film about food, the actions have to hold up to scrutiny. How the mold is pressed, how the filling goes in, whether the box is full — viewers can tell at a glance whether it's right.
So during revisions we found real videos of hand-pressed mooncakes for reference and redid the molding, filling and boxing shots one by one: the wooden mold presses down and lifts up, leaving crisp patterns on the dough, and the lid only goes on once the gift box is full.
Clip · 00:15–00:21
The Wooden Mold Presses Down, the Pattern Appears
Redone to follow the real motions of hand-pressing mooncakes: press, lift, reveal the pattern, each step easy to follow.
Baking is the scene where the food texture shines most. The camera sits inside the oven looking out: a rabbit pushes in a tray of pale mooncakes, the door closes and the frame goes dark; when it opens again, the crusts are baked glossy and golden. The camera never moves, so the change from before to after baking is obvious at a glance.
Clip · 00:21–00:26
Watching the mooncakes bake from inside the oven
Same camera position, door shut, door open: the mooncakes go from pale to golden, and the rabbit leans in with a smile.
After the visuals were finished, the film went through another round of voiceover and music refinement before it was final.

What this project achieved
This film answers a very practical question: can AI make a holiday food ad that looks beautiful, looks delicious and is fun to watch?
Beautiful comes from the warm light and ancient-style setting of the Moon Palace workshop; delicious comes from the molded patterns and the golden crusts baked in the oven; fun comes from a group of rabbits with distinct personalities and the little episodes hidden in the process.
The characters' turnaround views were locked before generating video, so the same rabbit is recognizable in every shot; each step was checked against how it's really done, so viewers can follow it and trust it. The same approach works for promos for other holiday gift boxes, foods and stores.
FAQ
FAQ
With several characters in an AI animated short, how do you keep them looking the same in every shot?
We first made front, side and back turnaround views plus a head close-up for each rabbit, fed these character images in as references when generating video, then generated shot by shot and checked each segment. That's why the same rabbit is recognizable across different shots, from kneading to baking to boxing.
Will the actions in AI-generated food footage look unrealistic?
That risk is real, so it needs dedicated checking. During revisions for this film, we used real videos of hand-pressed mooncakes as reference and redid the molding, filling and boxing shots one by one. In the final film, the wooden mold presses down and lifts with a crisp pattern, and the lid only goes on once the gift box is full.
Why put the mooncake workshop in the Moon Palace, but not make it a sci-fi factory?
The Moon Palace keeps the Mid-Autumn association, but a mechanical assembly line kills the appetite. So the setting became a handmade workshop with an ancient-style timber structure, using warm lamps, the oven fire, wooden worktables and clay jars to give the image a homey feel and make the mooncakes look more delicious.
What are the specs of this film? Can it be done for other holidays?
The final film runs 36.8 seconds at 1920×1080, 16:9 landscape, with voiceover and music. The same approach of character design plus process-driven storytelling can be used for promos for other holiday gift boxes, foods and stores.
Approach
A warm handmade workshop
The imagery centers on traditional handcraft and warm food presentation: wooden worktables, hand tools, and a palette of warm off-white, honey gold and baked gold. The film keeps the oven fire, round windows and multiple workstations, and the fantasy setting always serves the making process.
Each rabbit's personality comes from its job, with a cute look and upbeat expressions. In the final film, the kneading rabbit is focused and putting in effort, the filling and wrapping rabbits play out a sneaky bite and a reminder, and the glazing rabbit's yawn shows its sleepiness. Compared with uniform production-line movements, these differences are what viewers remember.
The props and actions in mooncake making have to be easy to follow too. During production we specifically checked the filling, boxing and molding against real hand-pressed mooncake making; the film uses a continuous sequence of the mold pressing down, the pattern releasing, the tray going into the oven and the boxing, so viewers can see how a mooncake is made step by step.
