01 / Background
Seven Spring Festival venues, one quest to bring back the New Year spirit
Kuaishou's 2026 CNY content campaign needed to fit the highlights of its venues, including the temple fair, short dramas, stage shows, sports, the New Year's Eve dinner, the gala and celebrity greetings, into one horizontal micro-drama. With so many venues and such a wide range of content, the film had to make the events memorable while telling a story people would want to keep watching.
The film starts with an old reunion photo in Xiaoma's hands, sending Xiaokuai, Xiaoliu and Xiaoma to collect seven totems within twelve hours. The map ties where to go, what to experience and what to bring back into one quest, but the real answer is saved for the end: the New Year spirit is something everyone creates together, and collecting the items is simply how people come back together.
02 / Creative Highlights
How events become levels in the story
01
Every event becomes a clue that moves the plot
Simply showing the venues one by one would easily turn into an event catalog. The film uses map puzzles to make each segment a cycle of searching, experiencing and collecting: the fan at the temple fair, the sunflower seeds at the screening venue and the coin in the New Year's Eve dinner all relate directly to their venue. The fan first lands on Xiaoma's head by accident before the heroes recognize it, so solving the puzzle also brings comic action. As the audience experiences each event through the characters, the plot moves forward a step.
02
A countdown that connects very different chapters
The daytime temple fair, the ice and snow sports and the nighttime gala each have their own rhythm. As the remaining time keeps shrinking and the map and horse-drawn carriage keep reappearing, the audience always knows where the journey has reached; as midnight nears, the collecting quest naturally grows more urgent.
03
Keeping the characters distinct in every scene
The three heroes travel through a great many scenes and must be instantly recognizable while each reacting in their own way. Xiaokuai has no mouth, Xiaoliu has a mouth and blush, and Xiaoma is plush and wears winter clothes, so they are easy to tell apart. Turnarounds, back details and the three characters' relative sizes follow the same standard in every scene, so the heroes stay the same trio across all seven legs of the journey.
04
From collecting totems to celebrating together
If collecting the items instantly broke the seal, “reunion” would be nothing more than a closing slogan. The film saves the last challenge for the altar: even after the scrolls are back in place, the heroes can't finish on their own, and only when everyone lends a hand does the golden pillar of light shine. The reunion photo at the start and the group shot at the end echo each other, and the New Year spirit is no longer something to collect but something everyone celebrates into being.
03 / Scene Breakdown
Following the countdown to find the New Year spirit
Film · 00:00–00:31
Opening: The New Year Spirit Has Left Xiaoma Village
After the snow, Xiaoma Village is empty. Holding an old photo, Xiaoma remembers how lively the New Year used to be. The Village Chief sets a quest: collect 7 totems within 12 hours and bring them to the bonfire platform on the hill behind the village.
Clip · 00:03–00:08
A deserted snowy village
The camera descends from above onto snow-covered Xiaoma Village, with no one in the streets; a lantern at a window sways in the cold wind, and Xiaoma is alone inside.
Clip · 00:08–00:14
An old reunion photo
Xiaoma holds the photo in both hands: a family gathered around a table full of New Year dishes. The warm memory set against the bleakness outside makes the story's starting point clear.
Clip · 00:14–00:21
Finding the Village Chief, getting the scroll
Xiaoma pushes open the door and asks the Village Chief how to bring back the New Year spirit. The scene cuts to the two New Year Spirit Ambassadors at the village entrance: Xiaokuai and Xiaoliu, waiting for him with the scroll.
Clip · 00:22–00:30
The bonfire platform and setting off
The stone platform on the hill sits cold and empty. The camera pushes in on the spiral groove in its surface, the end point of the whole film. Then the three meet under the Xiaoma Village archway, ready to set off.
Film · 00:31–01:34
Temple Fair & Screening Plaza: The First Two Totems
The first stop is the temple fair, the second a short-drama screening. The riddles are hidden in the venues: a yangge fan and a bowl of sunflower seeds.
Clip · 00:35–00:42
The first riddle rises from the scroll
The scroll unrolls and a line of gold-foil riddle text floats into the air, with 10 hours 59 minutes left on the countdown in the lower right. The three then walk into a temple fair street hung with lanterns.
Clip · 00:49–00:55
A yangge fan lands on Xiaoma's head
As a shehuo yangge troupe passes, a fan of colored silk flies over and covers Xiaoma's head. Xiaokuai lifts it off and suddenly gets it: the answer is the fan.
Clip · 00:57–01:03
Returning the fan to the yangge troupe
Xiaokuai returns the fan to the yangge dancers, and Xiaoliu invites them back to Xiaoma Village for the New Year. Along with the totem, the heroes gain a group of travel companions.
Clip · 01:03–01:09
A fire horse pulls the sleigh to the next stop
A fiery red horse sets off pulling the sleigh, the yangge troupe still dancing on board; icons of a projector and sunflower seeds light up on the scroll. The next stop is an open-air cinema.
Clip · 01:12–01:18
A bowl of sunflower seeds at the dried-goods shop
An auntie waves the three little ones over to sit down, and the camera shows a heaping bowl of sunflower seeds. Xiaoliu can't stop swallowing.
Clip · 01:21–01:27
The seeds become the second totem
A beam of golden light flies from the seeds into the scroll, the second stop lights up on the map and the countdown jumps to 8 hours 09 minutes.
Film · 01:34–02:58
The Ice Arena & the Winter Games
From afternoon to evening, the journey moves onto the ice: first a tractor race on ice and snow, then Briar and Bramble's Winter Games, an anime song party and a basketball game.
Clip · 01:34–01:41
A clue of a wheel and a trophy
In a snowy forest, the scroll on the carriage reveals a new clue: a wheel and a little horse trophy. Six hours remain on the countdown.
Clip · 01:42–01:47
Watching four screens backstage
Xiaoma and friends crowd around the monitors backstage as Xiaokuai takes his seat on a tractor in lane 3; the scene cuts to the arch over the track, the timer hits zero, and the race begins.
Clip · 01:53–01:59
The ultimate tractor showdown
The two tractors' tires nearly collide, sending ice chips flying. Teeth gritted, Xiaokuai grips the wheel and races side by side with his rival toward the finish.

Clip · 03:21–03:28
A banquet in the snowy village

Clip · 03:58–04:04
The Spring Festival Gala
On the gala stage, the host invites the audience to take on a dance challenge; the camera then turns to the audience, where the three heroes are sitting.
Clip · 04:12–04:19
Xiaoliu receives a pair of couplets
Xiaoliu stands center stage as gold-lettered couplets drop on either side, with the line “Congratulations to Xiaoliu on winning a pair of New Year couplets.” This stop's totem is hidden in the couplets.
Clip · 04:45–04:51
Answer correctly, get a red envelope
Backstage at the Star Gala, a performer in a red jacket holds up a red envelope and poses a question; a light bulb lights up above Xiaokuai's head again, and he answers first.
Clip · 04:54–05:01
The last totem flies out of a red envelope
The performer hands over the red envelope, golden light glows from inside, the scroll in Xiaoma's hands lights up too, and all seven totems are finally collected.
Film · 05:01–06:05
The Bonfire Platform: Lighting Up the New Year Spirit Together
Before midnight, the three hurry back to the hill. All the totems are collected, yet the bonfire platform doesn't light up right away; in the end, it takes everyone working together.
Clip · 05:01–05:08
All seven collected, racing through the night

Liandan AI Studio × Kuaishou | Bringing back the New Year spirit in 12 hours: one AI animated micro-drama links 7 Spring Festival venues
Before the Spring Festival, Kuaishou wanted to present its temple fair, short dramas, ice and snow events, New Year's Eve dinner, gala and celebrity New Year greetings to audiences all in one go.
Seven venues, dozens of events. Introducing them one by one would just make a program listing.
We turned it into a story: the New Year spirit has disappeared from Xiaoma Village, and Xiaoma and the New Year Spirit Ambassadors, Xiaokuai and Xiaoliu, must collect 7 totems within 12 hours.
The main film runs 7:09, with a vertical version, a 4K HDR version and 10-, 15- and 30-second short versions, released simultaneously on Kuaishou, Liaoning Satellite TV and in cinemas.

Kuaishou's brief was clear: a 16:9 horizontal AI animation with the plot and interaction of a short drama; a tone of “strong visual impact + a warm story at its core”; the three Kuaishou CNY IP characters, Xiaokuai, Xiaoliu and Xiaoma, as the leads; and the most important events from each venue built in.
With so many venues and such a mix of events, the biggest risk was ending up with an event catalog.
We tied them together with two things: a countdown and a collecting quest.
From 12 noon to midnight is exactly 12 hours. Each venue gets its own time slot: the temple fair and short dramas in the afternoon, the ice rink at dusk, New Year's Eve dinner and the gala after dark, and the Star Gala late at night. Every stop follows the same rhythm: a riddle, an event, a totem, then off again.
Each venue's main event gets plenty of screen time, while secondary events pass in a shot or two. By the time the audience has followed the three heroes all the way around, they have toured all seven venues.

A scroll map that always shows the audience where they are
The original script had just one line for this: place all the totems in the grooves of the bonfire platform to break the seal.
We added a prop to make it work: the illustrated scroll. The scroll shows a map of Kuaishou Village, with eight stops around a round altar in the center and the countdown in the lower right. Each time a totem is collected, a beam of golden light flies into the scroll and lights up a stop.
This way, every time the scroll opens, the audience sees three things: the riddle for the next stop, the places already visited and how many hours are left.
Stop 1: a gold-foil riddle rises from the scroll, countdown at 10:59After stop 7: all seven stops lit, only 1 hour 02 minutes left
The riddles all come from the venues too: the yangge fan at the temple fair, sunflower seeds at the cinema, the trophy at the ice race, speed skates at the Winter Games, dumplings at New Year's Eve dinner, couplets at the gala and red envelopes at the Star Gala. Finding each answer means taking part in that venue's event.

Three heroes, seven journeys, always the same characters
The seven venues were produced by separate teams. The biggest risk was the heroes “looking different” from one segment to the next.
So before work began, everything that runs through the whole film was locked down: turnarounds of the three heroes, the carriage, the totems and the map. Xiaokuai has no mouth, Xiaoliu has a mouth and blush, and Xiaoma has a plush texture and a red scarf; even whether Xiaokuai and Xiaoliu have tails and who is taller when the three stand together went into a single set of checking standards.
Final turnaround of Xiaokuai: no mouthFinal turnaround of Xiaoliu: mouth and blush
Every segment's images were checked against these standards, and any details AI couldn't fix were handed to an illustrator to repair by hand.
New characters join the ride at every venue: the yangge troupe, Briar and Bramble, gala performers... The fire horse pulls the sleigh with the three heroes up front and each stop's new companions behind. By the time they return to the bonfire platform at the end, everyone they met along the way is there.
04
All the totems collected, one step still to go
If collecting the totems instantly broke the seal, “reunion” would be just a slogan at the end.
We left one last challenge at the bonfire platform: Xiaoma places the scroll, sparks flash, then fade. The Village Chief says, “Let's all lend a hand.” Everyone they met along the way presses their hands to the stone platform, and only then does the golden pillar of light shoot into the night sky.

Everyone lends a hand
Seen from directly above, everyone presses their hands to the stone platform, and the patterns light up ring by ring.
Ribbons of light flow along the rooftops back into the village, and the streets fill once more with people celebrating. The old reunion photo from the opening finds its answer here: the New Year spirit isn't something you collect; it's something people create by coming together.

Bonus scene: one long scroll that revisits all seven venues
After the main film ends, an illustrated scroll unrolls from the clouds. We painted each venue as a 2.5D Guochao-style illustration, created the images in eight sections with a unified color grade, then stitched them into a single 43520 × 2286-pixel panorama.
The camera travels horizontally for one minute, passing the temple fair, the cinema, the ice rink, New Year's Eve dinner, the gala and the Star Gala in turn. The streets and stalls there was no time to linger on in the main film can all be seen clearly here.

One main film, versions for every screen
The film had to play in many places: vertical phone screens, TV, large outdoor screens and cinemas.
Alongside the 16:9 horizontal main film, we delivered a full vertical version, a 4K HDR 50 fps version, and short versions including 10-, 15- and 30-second bonus-scene cuts; cinemas used a 2.35:1 DCP format, and LED screens a 16:9 version.
After launch, the main film was announced by Kuaishou's official trending account and released on Kuaishou; the 15-second version aired on Liaoning Satellite TV; clips were used as filler before the Spring Festival Gala livestream on Kuaishou and screened in cinemas as a promotional film. Views across platforms passed 100M.
07
What this project achieved
For the brand, the film turned a very long list of events into an adventure audiences want to watch to the end.
The countdown keeps the pace moving forward. The riddles turn each event into plot. The scroll map keeps the audience from getting lost. And that final moment of “everyone lending a hand” brings the New Year spirit back to people.
AI made it possible for us to build an animated world of seven venues and more than a hundred shots in a few weeks; but what makes it a film is deciding first how the story unfolds, then making every frame serve that path.
FAQ
FAQ
How do you keep the leads consistent across dozens of scenes in an AI animated short drama?
Before work begins, we lock down turnarounds, props and the map, and write the details into checking standards: in this project, Xiaokuai has no mouth, Xiaoliu has a mouth and blush, neither Xiaokuai nor Xiaoliu has a tail, and the three characters' height ratios are fixed. Teams work in parallel, every segment's images are checked against the same standards, and any details AI can't fix are handed to an illustrator to repair by hand.
How long does a 7-minute AI animated micro-drama take from kickoff to delivery?
The Kuaishou CNY film took about two months, and all versions were delivered in mid-February 2026. The main film was split into the opening, seven venues, the ending and the bonus scene, with several teams writing storyboards and producing images and video in parallel, followed by unified editing, voiceover and color grading.
With so many event venues, how do you fit them into one story-driven film?
Tie them together with a countdown and a collecting quest: 12 hours from noon to midnight, each venue with its own time slot, and every stop following the same steps: a riddle, an event, a totem, then off again. Main events get plenty of screen time, secondary ones pass in a shot or two, and a scroll map keeps the audience aware of where they are at all times.
What sizes and versions can one film be made into?
This project delivered a 16:9 horizontal main film (7:09), a full vertical version, a 4K HDR 50 fps version, 10-, 15- and 30-second short versions, a 2.35:1 DCP version for cinemas and a 16:9 version for large LED screens, used respectively on Kuaishou, Liaoning Satellite TV, as filler before the Spring Festival Gala livestream and in cinemas.
Approach
Maps, characters and sound that carry through all seven venues
Production began by locking down the character turnarounds, totems, carriage and map separately, then writing the shot size, action, dialogue and corresponding visuals into the storyboard for each venue. The heroes' faces, backs and relative proportions followed a unified standard, so scenes could be generated separately and still match when combined.
The map marks the order of venues and the time remaining from noon to midnight, and every stop follows the same rhythm: get the riddle, join the event, win the totem, move on. Prompt sounds and the effects for totems flying up and returning to place were made as a unified set, while voice acting varies by character and the mood of each scene. These recurring cues keep the audience oriented across the different event chapters.
The closing panoramic scroll was color-graded and stitched section by section by venue. The film shifts from a 3D character adventure into a horizontally unfolding Spring Festival illustrated scroll, where the temple fair, stages and reunion scenes reappear, extending the festive details the main story had no time to linger on.
