01 / Background
Familiar friends on a new Spring Festival stage
This short was part of the program for Kuaishou's Boonie Bears Spring Festival venue, with video technology support from Kuaishou Kling AI, to build anticipation for the Spring Festival film “Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector.” Audiences know Briar, Bramble and Logger Vick extremely well, so the film had to let people recognize old friends at a glance while offering images they had never seen before.
The script settled on a magic show in a felt studio: on a live-action stage filmed by the organizer, two hosts push open a door and step straight into the felt world we built, where the three friends take turns performing with a bowl, a lamp, a cloth and a seed. That gives the change of material a reason within the story, and the New Year wishes aren't just spoken; the characters conjure them up together.
The character designs follow the little bears from “Boonie Cubs”, keeping recognizable features such as fur color and chest markings; the felt texture also extends to the whole studio: wooden walls, floors, characters and the props in their hands are all the same soft material, so every magic transformation happens within one consistent world.
02 / Creative Highlights
Using a magic show to explain a world made of material
01
New material, still-recognizable characters
A new material can't make the classic characters unrecognizable. Briar and Bramble keep their fur color and chest markings, while the characters, cabin, props and food are all unified in a felt texture; viewers first recognize their familiar friends, then feel this new, soft world through close-ups of costumes, walls and lighting.
02
Spectacle that starts from an action you can follow
Fantasy images need a starting point. Starlight in a bowl is drawn out into yarn, and the yarn weaves a “Fu” character under the roof; a gray cloth sprouts a miniature landscape, and a golden deer brings forth a forest. Where each change begins, how it unfolds and what it becomes all have their own shots, so viewers can recognize scenes from the classic films and also see which prop in this magic show they came from.
03
Guests lead the audience into the reunion
The live-action opening takes the audience from reality into the story, and plush guests watch and join the show alongside the Boonie Bears characters; it ends back in the cabin with New Year wishes, landing the story on togetherness and companionship.

Liandan AI Studio × Kuaishou × Boonie Bears | Bringing the three friends into a felt magic cabin
Briar, Bramble and Logger Vick are known to nearly every family in China.
This time, we turned them into little felt dolls, invited them into a warm yellow wooden cabin, and had them put on a New Year magic show for the audience.
This is a vertical short we made for Kuaishou's Boonie Bears Spring Festival venue, with video technology support from Kuaishou Kling AI, to build anticipation for the Spring Festival film “Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector.”

How do you make characters everyone knows feel fresh?
Kuaishou was hosting a Boonie Bears-themed livestream venue for the Spring Festival season and needed a segment to warm up audiences for the film “The Hidden Protector.”
The challenge: the three friends are just too familiar. Another forest chase scene wouldn't get a second look.
The script direction Kuaishou and the IP owner chose was an “Unbe-weave-able” Magic Show: the three friends as felt magicians and the two hosts as an amazed audience. Five magic tricks, each with an auspicious phrase: One Bowl, Endless Wonders; One Lamp Lights Every Home; One Cloth Brings All Things to Life; One Tree Nurtures Every Life; and finally a red heart to deliver the wishes.
Our job was to turn these five passages of text into shots that were clear and actually producible, and to connect them to the live-action stage: a host pushes open a door on stage, and the next second walks into the felt world.
Clip · 00:19–00:27
From the live-action stage into the felt cabin
The first half is the live-action stage filmed by the organizer; after a flash of white light comes the felt cabin we made.
02
The whole world is made of felt
In the first week, we didn't rush into storyboards; we ran material tests first: plush or felt? Only the characters in felt, or the walls and floors too?
We handed the test results to the client to choose from, and settled on this: The whole world is made of felt. Characters, cabin, bookshelves, rug, bowl and lamp all share the same slightly stiff, fuzzy wool-felt texture.
The character designs use the little bears from “Boonie Cubs”, which are rounder and cuter than the bears in the feature films. The IP owner set two lines we couldn't cross: Briar and Bramble's fur color, and their chest markings. We wrote each character's height, fur color, pupil color, scarf and number of fingers into a fixed spec, and every image was generated with that spec.
The story is also set at night: a snowy night outside, warm lights indoors, so that when the revolving lantern projects later, the darkened room has light and shadow to show.
The three friends welcome guests at the magic table (final still)A “Fu” character woven from yarn hangs under the beams (final still)
03
Every trick starts with a prop
A magic trick only works if the audience knows where it came from.
So every spectacle is first given a visible prop: Bramble's white bowl, Logger Vick's revolving lantern, the hosts' black cloth, and the seed Logger Vick drops. The camera shows the prop first, then follows it as it transforms.
Stars in the bowl are drawn into colored yarn, which weaves a “Fu” under the beams; the revolving lantern projects a train, a homecoming and dumplings boiling onto the black cloth; the black cloth sprouts grass, and a golden deer runs out an entire forest; the seed grows into a wishing tree, and Tuanzi leads a whale across the starry sky.
Hidden in all this are three scenes longtime fans will recognize: the little train through the snowy forest comes from “Boonie Bears: Homeward Journey”, the golden deer from “Boonie Bears: Entangled Worlds”, and Tuanzi from “Boonie Bears: Mystical Winter.”

04
36 stills, locked first, then animated
The biggest risk with a felt look is inconsistency: fuzzy in one shot, plastic in the next.
Our approach: lock in the still for every shot first, then generate the video. The written storyboard came to 36 shots; each shot first got a vertical still, with characters, sets and props all drawn from the same set of reference images, so the room's bookshelves, windows and magic table match from shot to shot.
The client approved the stills one by one. The client wanted the deer sequence to end at Logger Vick's little cabin, so we switched the setting of those shots to the cabin and forest. Once every still was approved, we generated the video shot by shot, with most clips generated by Kling AI.

05
Retuning pace and detail against the finished film
After the first cut, the client wrote in their feedback document that “the overall visual style is excellent,” and asked for a slightly slower pace.
We slowed the edit, leaving more time for each transformation and for the hosts' reactions, switched the magic segments to music from the IP owner's library, and extended the felt animation from the planned 1 minute or so to 1:55. All dialogue was voiced by the IP owner's voice actors, and we then synced the lip movements to the voice track.
Before delivery, the IP owner wanted Briar's nose closer to how it looks in the feature films. We regenerated the stills and video for the affected shots and controlled the nose size in image-editing software, so the color changed but he was still the same cute little bear.

What this project achieved
The short was released with Kuaishou as its main platform and shared on other social platforms, reaching 2M+ views and 30K+ likes across platforms.
For a nationally loved IP, what AI offers goes beyond simply changing the art style.
It let us build a brand-new world for familiar characters in a very short time: a felt cabin, five magic tricks and three classic memories.
The characters are still the ones everyone knows, but what the audience sees is something they've never seen before.

FAQ
FAQ
When using AI to make an animated short with a classic IP, how do you keep the characters on-model?
First, confirm with the IP owner what can't be changed; for this project, it was Briar and Bramble's fur color and chest markings. Then give each character a fixed spec: based on the little bears from “Boonie Cubs”, with height, fur color, pupil color, scarf and number of fingers written down. All 36 stills were generated with the same set of reference images, and video was only generated after the client approved the stills, so the characters stay consistent throughout the film.
How long did this AI animated short take from brief to delivery?
We received the brief on December 23, 2025 and spent a week on material tests; the 36-shot storyboard was finished in mid-January, the stills were locked on January 21, the first cut came out on January 22, and the final version with voice-over and end card was delivered on February 2, about 6 weeks in all.
Which platforms suit vertical shorts? How long can they be?
This film is 1080×1920, 9:16 vertical, 2:19 in total, released mainly on Kuaishou and shared on other social platforms. The length is set by the script: this project was originally planned at about 1 minute, but the five magic tricks actually needed 1:55, and after confirming with the client we delivered the full version.
How do voice-over and music work with the AI visuals?
For this project, all dialogue was voiced by the IP owner's voice actors, and the music came from the IP owner's library. We left room for the dialogue and music during editing, then synced the lips once the voice track arrived before compositing and delivering.
Approach
From felt storyboards to character performance
Production began by testing the materials for characters and sets and confirming the “whole world is made of felt” direction, then used the established character designs and cabin set to build multi-character storyboards. The characters' height, costumes, handheld props and interior decor were checked again and again across consecutive shots; in close-ups, even details like the nose were refined one by one, so the soft texture holds up to a close look.
The storyboard stills plan, shot by shot, who speaks, who is looking and how each action extends from the bowl, lamp and cloth into a fantasy space. The edit is paced fairly slowly, and the magic segments use library music provided by the IP owner, leaving plenty of time for the material transformations and the guests' reactions.
The film had video technology support from Kuaishou Kling AI. The structure of live-action opening, felt performance and return to the cabin lets the audience step clearly from reality into the felt world; the ending moves from spectacle back to the characters sending wishes together, landing on the warmth of the Spring Festival.
