Five modules, one plant
From the grid’s peak–valley problem and how the reversible unit switches, to night pumping, peak generation and the daily energy balance—one module per step, scrubbable to any moment.
Power plants and grids are hard to explain to executives, reviewers and the public because the important parts are invisible: how water moves inside the mountain, when the unit spins forward or in reverse, and how much one plant really changes the grid’s load curve. This lab draws a pumped storage plant in code—from the grid’s daily peaks and valleys, through the reversible unit switching direction, pumping at night and generating at peak, to the day’s energy balance.
Power, flow, storage and round-trip efficiency are computed from hydraulic formulas, and pumping and generation are scheduled from the load curve. Drag the head, installed capacity or peak–valley gap, or switch to variable-speed units, and the drawing, curves and readings change together. Your own plant, grid or storage project can be made the same way—as video, GIFs or a web demo.
450 m head · 4 × 300 MW reversible units · 8 million m³ usable upper storage · 10 GW regional peak load
Load at 4 a.m. can be a third lower than at 8 p.m. When the evening peak exceeds what conventional units can supply there is a shortfall; when the night valley drops below their minimum output, wind power has to be curtailed. The pumped storage plant is still idle.
The pump-turbine and motor-generator form one reversible unit. To generate, water flows from the spiral case through the guide vanes into the runner, which spins forward. To pump, the unit stops, a frequency converter drives it up to reverse synchronous speed, and the runner flings water back into the spiral case and up the mountain. The switch takes about ten minutes.
Whenever load falls below the fill line, the units reverse and pump, turning the grid’s surplus—including night-time wind—into water in the upper reservoir. Fixed-speed units can only switch whole units on at full power, so the curve steps; variable-speed units can follow the load smoothly.
Whenever load rises above the shaving line, the units run forward and reach full output within minutes. Water runs from the upper to the lower reservoir and is nearly used up as the evening peak passes, then pumped back up overnight for the next day.
Four units of pumping energy give back about three—round-trip efficiency is around 77%, with most losses in the pump and turbine. In return, conventional units run steadily all day, no extra plant is needed for a few peak hours, and night-time wind no longer has to be curtailed.

Output, flow, stored energy and efficiency come from ρgQH and stage efficiencies; pumping and generating hours are scheduled from the load curve, and curves, readings and drawing share the same numbers.
Head, capacity, peak–valley gap and unit type are adjustable, so you can try “what if the head were halved” or “are two more units enough” on the spot.
