Four steps, one city block
From a flooding paved block and sponge measures to a split-screen comparison and reuse—one module per step, scrubbable to any moment.
Sponge-city and flood-control work has to be explained to officials, deputies and residents, but where rainwater goes is invisible: why streets still flood after new pipes, how much rain permeable paving and green space really absorb, where a storage tank goes and how big it should be. This lab draws a city block in section—from a paved block flooding in a storm, through infiltration, detention and storage, to a side-by-side comparison of the same storm and reuse afterwards.
Rain is distributed minute by minute with a Chicago storm pattern; runoff, infiltration, routing, sewer overflow and ponding depth are computed each minute. Drag the rainfall, permeable share or tank volume, or raise the sewer standard from 3-year to 5-year, and the drawing, hydrographs and readings change together. Your urban renewal, sponge-city or drainage project can be made the same way—as video, GIFs or a web demo.
20 ha block · 2-hour storm · Chicago pattern · 3-year sewer · ponding over 15 cm counts as flooding
Roofs, roads and plazas are hard, so nearly all rain becomes runoff and reaches the sewer within minutes. At the storm peak the flow exceeds sewer capacity, water backs up out of the inlets and ponds at the low point; above 15 cm it counts as urban flooding.
Permeable paving lets rain pass into the gravel bed and soil; sunken green and rain gardens sit below the street, catch runoff from roofs and roads and overflow only when full; green roofs absorb some first. When flow exceeds about a third of sewer capacity, the excess goes into the underground tank, shaving the peak.
Left is the conventional block, right the sponge block, under the same storm. Sponge measures absorb part of the rain and lengthen flow paths, so the peak is both lower and later; the sewer copes and the street stays dry. Drag the rainfall above 120 mm: sponge measures have limits, and extreme storms still need pipes, pumps and flood routes.
Stored rainwater is used at about 250 m³ a day to irrigate green space and wash streets, emptying the tank within days for the next storm. Over a year most small and medium rains are absorbed on site; the usual sponge-city target for annual runoff volume control is 75–85%.

Rain, infiltration, routing, sewer overflow, ponding and tank level are computed minute by minute; hydrographs, readings and drawing share the same numbers.
Rainfall, permeable share, tank volume and sewer standard are adjustable, so you can try “will 120 mm flood the street” or “how big must the tank be” on the spot.
The same lab records as 4K video, splits into step GIFs, or runs on a government website, a planning-exhibition touchscreen or in a briefing.
