Patent figures that move

Patent disclosures, litigation and fundraising all need non-engineers to grasp within minutes how a device moves and exactly what is protected. Paper figures are static lines and numbers, and claims are long legal sentences. This lab draws a planetary gear reducer in patent-figure style: front view and section side by side, consistent reference numerals, and gears turning with true tooth shapes and speed ratios.
Ratio, member speeds, output torque and mesh frequency are computed from the Willis equation, and the tooth counts are checked for equal planet spacing on the spot. The last step maps a set of typically drafted claims to the reference numerals, just like a claim chart in an infringement analysis. Your own patent, product or case can be made the same way—as video, GIFs or a web demo.
Sun 18 teeth · ring 72 · planets 27 × 3 · module 2 mm · 20° pressure angle · 15 kW
The sun sits in the middle with planets around it, an internal ring outside, and the planet pins mounted on the carrier. Not every tooth count works: ring teeth equal sun plus twice the planet, and (Zs + Zr) must divide evenly by the number of planets. Try switching to four planets.
With the ring fixed, each planet orbits the sun while spinning, rolling inside the ring. Its outer edge is at rest, its inner edge matches the sun, and its centre moves at half that—so the carrier slows down: i = 1 + Zr/Zs = 5. The three lines in the speed diagram show exactly this.
Holding the ring gives a large reduction; holding the carrier makes an ordinary gear train with reversed output; holding the sun with the ring as input gives a mild reduction. Automatic gearboxes shift by locking different members with clutches, and patents often claim these modes as separate dependent claims.
Independent claim 1 splits into features 1a–1d, each of which must be found in the product; dependent claims add the tooth relations and ratio. Infringement analysis, validity defence and due diligence all work through the chart cell by cell like this.

Involute teeth generated at a 20° pressure angle; each gear’s angle follows the mesh phase and the Willis equation, so teeth stay engaged and speed ratios match the real thing.
Claims split into features and highlighted on the figures one by one, with a synchronized claim chart—for infringement comparison, validity defence and due diligence.
