Five modules, one treatment line
Influent, anaerobic, anoxic, aerobic and clarifier—what each tank does and which microbes do it, one module per step, scrubbable to any moment.
Wastewater processes are hard to explain to executives, reviewers and the public because what matters is invisible: nitrogen and phosphorus are dissolved, the work is done by microbes, and the tanks alone don’t show why they are arranged this way or why the recycles are so large. This lab draws an AAO treatment line in code—from influent quality, through anaerobic phosphorus release, anoxic denitrification and aerobic nitrification and uptake, to the final clarifier effluent checked against the Class 1A standard.
COD, ammonia, nitrate and phosphorus are computed tank by tank with a simplified activated-sludge model, iterating the internal and sludge recycles to convergence. Drag dissolved oxygen, recycle ratio or water temperature, or switch to a low-carbon influent, and the tank colours, curves and effluent readings change together. Your own plant, process or equipment can be made the same way—as video, GIFs or a web demo.
20,000 m³/d · anaerobic 1.5 h + anoxic 3 h + aerobic 8 h · MLVSS 2,500 mg/L · Class 1A discharge
Municipal sewage carries six to ten times the allowed COD, ammonia and phosphorus. Both nitrogen and phosphorus removal feed on the organics in the sewage; if carbon is short they compete. Try the low-carbon influent.
The anaerobic tank is mixed but not aerated. PAOs take up readily degradable organics and store them as PHA, paying by breaking down internal polyphosphate and releasing phosphate—so phosphorus here is higher than in the influent. Nitrate in the return sludge grabs some of the organics first, leaving less for the PAOs.
Nitrate is made in the aerobic tank, so mixed liquor is pumped from its end back to the anoxic tank, where denitrifiers use organics to reduce it to nitrogen gas without oxygen. More recycle brings back more nitrate, but beyond 200–300% carbon runs short and recycled oxygen interferes, so total nitrogen stops falling.
Nitrifiers grow slowly, dislike cold and need oxygen: below about 1 mg/L DO or near 10 °C, ammonia tends to break through. PAOs use the PHA stored earlier to take up more phosphorus than they released; the phosphorus finally leaves with the waste sludge.
Activated sludge settles in the clarifier and clear water overflows. Most settled sludge returns to the anaerobic tank; the excess is wasted, and the phosphorus-laden PAOs leave the system with it. Top right checks Class 1A: COD 50, ammonia 5 (8 in winter), TN 15, TP 0.5 mg/L.
Influent, anaerobic, anoxic, aerobic and clarifier—what each tank does and which microbes do it, one module per step, scrubbable to any moment.
COD, ammonia, nitrate and phosphorus in every tank come from an activated-sludge model; tank colours, curves and effluent readings share the same numbers.
DO, recycle ratio, temperature and influent carbon are adjustable, so you can try “will ammonia pass at 10 °C in winter” or “is 400% recycle worth it” on the spot.
The same lab records as 4K video, splits into step GIFs, or runs on your website, showroom touchscreen or a plant control-room wall.
